Location and facilities

Ashurst is a village and civil parish in the Horsham District of West Sussex. It is 11 miles south of Horsham and 3 miles north of Steyning. There is a 12th century parish church, dedicated to St James, a Church of England primary school, a Recreation Ground and a pub, The Fountain Inn. A brand-new village hall has been completed in Spring 2015.

Facts and Figures

The parish has a land area of 2493 acres. In the 2001 census 226 people lived in 97 households, of whom 112 were economically active. There are no street lights, shops, litter bins, public toilets or bus shelters. The Parish Council, which has 7 members, manage the Recreation Ground.

Connections with the famous

Sir Lawrence Olivier lived in Ashurst with his wife, Dame Joan Plowright, until his death in 1989. His funeral was held in St James' Church but his ashes are interred in Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey.

Margaret Fairless Barber, better known as Michael Fairless, is buried in Ashurst Church. After her death in 1901 her book 'The Roadmender' became a best-seller.

Paul McCartney and Wings filmed the video for Wonderful Christmastime in The Fountain Inn in 1979.
